Beatbox and Choir?

Upclose of Scott Medinger recording beatbox for MKS Studio Vivace Select Choir at Tesco Productions.

This past week I found myself with a first – recording Beatbox. It was also in combination with an unlikely source – a choral piece. The MKS Studio Vivace Select Choir each year records a song which is the basis for a music video. Tesco Productions has recorded the choir portion for several years now, and this year the choir had interest in adding a beatbox accompaniment.

MKS Studio director Monica Koffi contacted Scott Medinger for the part. He and I had some discussion about best practices for this type of recording, did a couple of test recordings with two different preamps, made our choice and got to recording. Scott is quite skilled at this art form, and take two was chosen. I definitely came away with a much enlightened appreciation for the complexity and skills needed to perform beatbox well. The Vivace Select Choir with Scott’s beatbox addition will find its way into the 2026 video with another creativity twist for a choral presentation.
